What does sustainable packaging mean?

Taking responsibility for our environment means taking a step back and thinking long-term. Packaging plays a vital role in ensuring we can enjoy the things we love when and where we want. But having this choice means we need to pay attention to what our packaging is made of. We need to care about how it performs. And most importantly, we need to care about what happens when we're done with it. This may seem like a lot to consider, but don't worry, when you take a whole life approach the answer is clear; sustainable packaging means PET.

PET offers a number of advantages. It requires less energy to produce than alternatives. It is also extremely light, strong and durable, which means less packaging is needed to protect our products. Lighter packaging means less fuel is needed for transportation, which reduces carbon emissions. In fact, PET bottles are getting lighter and lighter, 40% lighter than in 2000.

Almost uniquely among plastics, PET can be recycled and recycled into new products an almost infinite number of times, which reduces the need to produce new PET, further reducing emissions. In fact, recycled PET products show up to a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to virgin PET. Its high recyclability also reduces the likelihood of landfill, with around 58% of PET bottles being recycled in Europe today. This makes it the most recycled plastic packaging material.
